Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.
If you’ve searched Christian homeschooling at all, then you may have come across the books from the Christian Heroes: Then & Now Series from YWAM Publishing. These books are so dear to my heart and have provided my family with hours of enjoyment.
We received C.S.Lewis, Master Storyteller written by Janet and Geoff Benge with the digital unit study in exchange for our honest opinion.
This was not our first Christian Heroes book we read. In fact, we have read many others, including; George Mueller, Amy Carmichael, and Gladys Alyward. I was excited to do this review to see the unit study.
Review
What I appreciated most about the C.S. Lewis biography is his life before he was saved. We love the Chronicles of Narnia and I often thought of him as a man of God zealous to spread God’s truth. What I didn’t know was that he actually was an atheist before he came to the Lord.

It is fascinating to study people God has used in history and is still using currently. It grows one’s faith. This is what I love about the Christian Heroes: Then & Now series.
I won’t spoil the story for you but it is excellent and worth a read for anyone who has enjoyed C.S. Lewis’ works.
These books are rated for older elementary children, however, if your child likes read-aloud’s without pictures I highly recommend them. My oldest son LOVES these books. He is currently eight, however, we read our first one at 6. He will pick these over any other book in the house and if I’m willing he will listen all afternoon.
Don’t tell my son, but when he falls asleep I find these books so fascinating that I typically stay up extra late reading until my eyes close because they are so engaging!
YWAM does have audiobooks, so I may need to invest in some of these for him. I’m so grateful for these books because of the following reasons:
- Christian worldview
- Character building
- Historical novel like
- We all learn
- Rich language
- Help raise mission-minded kids!
Unit Study
We LOVE unit studies in our homeschool. After YWAM publishing’s unit study, my love for them has grown even more! Seriously, I cannot emphasize how inclusive it is.
There is a map study for geography, a word list with definitions for unfamiliar words. A history part and thought-provoking questions for all ages to consider. I really like the pages that show historically the other books they offer if you wanted to study a certain time of history specifically and match up books.
I LOVE that this is a digital product! I have a folder in my email that I keep all of my curriculum downloads, particularly one for unit studies. The great thing about unit studies is they can be done by all age children typically. Or if your kids are similar ages, you can file it away and save it, coming back in a couple of years when they are at a different level.
Honestly, I am already thinking of having an entire semester or year where we just do YWAM unit studies while adding math in of course. But the study is inclusive that you could use it as a full curriculum for a time if wanted.
Check out the other reviews on the crew for all that YWAM Publishing has to offer. They have a great set of historical biographies as well as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to name a couple. Click below!
