I was given the opportunity to use and review the computer program for children called Reading Unlocked.
What’s so cool about this reading unlocked program is that it is actually based on the Orton-Gillingham reading approach to teaching children how to read.
Reading Unlocked can be used on your computer, tablet or iPad. It is not an app and cannot be used on your phone. You must sign in through a browser in order to get to the program.
My younger son really likes learning digitally so I was excited to see his response to this program as he is 6 years old and is still learning to read. We have done multiple phonics programs digitally and workbook wise. I must say Reading Unlocked is like both of them put together into one easy-to-use format.
It is suggested that the parent work alongside the child as there are paper exercises to be done and at the end of each lesson a story that you read together. This actually is my favorite part of the program. As an American, I really appreciated the use of different poems than we might not be exposed to in the states as often. The developer is in the UK. They have a British accent if you want which is important in phonics learning for those who are in the UK.
I did have some trouble initially with the program working. Every time I would sign on it would be the same lesson repeating over and over after about a week. I realized there was an issue so I had connected with the company, and was helped immediately.
I should have thought of it first but as soon as I cleared my cache the lessons would pick up where they were supposed to. I was using an Apple iPad and if you’ve used Safari often this is the number one thing to troubleshoot.
I would suggest using Google Chrome if you’re using an iPad device. There is an option to be able to input what lesson you want your child to be on so if it does reset you can easily move it up to the next lesson. However, after clearing my cache I have not had any other issues of repeating lessons.
I must say that after using this program for a month my son is reading the best he ever has after finishing any phonics program. This is all we have been doing during this time as I wanted to really see if this program was beneficial and teaching him how to read.
Each lesson takes about 10 to 15 minutes for completion. The first time we had signed in my son loved it so much he wanted to do three in a row. How was I going to deny learning fun?
Orton Gillingham has been proven time and time again to be one of the best ways of teaching young children to read efficiently. However, if you’ve done other Orton-Gillingham programs you know they can take up time.
This is what I liked about reading unlocked so much. It is an extremely efficient way of teaching phonics in an Orton-Gillingham approach with only 10 to 15 minutes a day suggested.
My older son has had some delayed dyslexic issues. He really doesn’t like to learn digitally so after trying initially a couple times he did get frustrated with the program and would not continue. I was hoping he would want to try it so that his reading could improve as well however like I said this just happens to be the way he learns and any digital program he’s not receptive to.
Reading Unlocked is a great program and I would recommend trying it out with your child to see if it works for your family. The company is super on top of answering emails if you have any problems.
I think that the program will only continue to take off and help many children and families on their journey of reading. They even have a free trial so you really have nothing to lose!
