PRIDE Reading Program gave me the opportunity to review their Orton-Gillingham approach to reading. Since I have two different age boys, we were given a PRIDE yellow level 1 and PRIDE orange level 2 to incorporate into our homeschool education.
Orton Gillingham Approach
The Orton-Gillingham approach to reading has been used since the 1930s. It is a multi-sensory, structured, phonics-based system. The method uses visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning. The method uses constant interaction between the student and the teacher, with continual reinforcement.
The PRIDE Reading Program requires a training program for the parent that they provide so that you understand the method. The training includes videos and bullet points explaining the method and how to do the program with your child.
I have a reluctant reader and had looked into Orton-Gillingham before. However, at its price tag, I was apprehensive to buy it. I can assure you that IT WORKS! If teaching your child to read well is your goal no matter their age, this program really is the all-intensive phonics program that sticks!
Pride Reading Program
PRIDE Reading Program comes with manipulatives, a workbook, and the lesson manual is online. They have a test to make sure you get the right level for your child. When I gave my children the test, my oldest was assigned to orange level 2, and my youngest to yellow level 1.
Once we received the curriculum it was exactly what they needed. If you happened to switch to this curriculum mid-year, it would be simple to coordinate where your child is at in the workbook and lessons.
The average lesson they say takes about 25-35 minutes/day. However, I found that to do a whole lesson took us 1 hour. You could break this up into 2 sections.
When I first saw the curriculum I thought that my children would not like it, however, the exact opposite happened. My youngest especially loved the game part at the end and wanted to do it over and over.
We are eclectic Charlotte Mason base. For us personally, this curriculum doesn’t fit into our weekly rhythm. However, I will be planning on bringing it in in the summertime when we have more time to complete the program.
If you are traditional or classical in your approach to education this program would be highly useful in your homeschooling. It definitely does everything it says it will do. Your child will learn to read using this program, whether that is using it 20 minutes or 1 hour a day.
I really like that the teacher manual is online. For me, digital organization is a must in my minimalist cabin. Plus, if you had multiple children it’s easy to get a new workbook and not worry about saving the manual for years.
