We were given the opportunity to review Let’s go geography, Year 2. Let’s go geography is an online membership homeschool geography curriculum. It really is, in my opinion, the ultimate homeschool geography curriculum. I absolutely love digital products in my homeschool life. It makes it easy. As a minimalist living in a small cabin who loves too many books the more things I can simplify digitally the easier, it is for me.
The initial startup process for logging into Let’s go geography, Year 2 was relatively simple. Like any new membership, it takes a little exploring on their site to really understand where things are at. However, once the curriculum is opened and downloaded it is very easy to use. The printables are at the back of each unit, and the videos that correspond to each section are right in with that lesson plan.
One of my biggest concerns when reviewing something or considering purchasing, especially for something as important as a homeschool curriculum; is how reputable the company is.
In our age of digital products and lots of blogs, what computes to a reputable company with me is excellent customer service. Good business has been built on good customer service.
I initially had a concern about their sequence of learning. There isn’t an outline in a day 1 day 2 day 3 format to their course as in other curricula. It’s presented almost as if it were a unit study in an open-ended way. When I reached out to the company I received an email back that day with great tips for their sequencing.
I was told it depends on the age. With younger children, as I have, start with an hour a week. Sooooooo doable. The suggested sequence is one unit a week, but I was encouraged to go at whatever pace my children are at. With older children, there is more writing and activity that you can dive deeper into countries and places.
Easy to use
What I enjoy about Let’s Go Geography homeschool curriculum is that it is so easy to implement into my week. It doesn’t require a huge amount of pre-planning time which is a big one for me. I’m the homeschool mom who wants to open it up and go. For all of you who plan your entire year day by day, incredible!
We are eclectic in style and I would recommend this curriculum to any family who wants to have geography presented in an exciting fun way.
Geography can oftentimes just be dry memorization of facts. Even presented in a Charlotte Mason way just a tiny bit here and there still isn’t incredibly exciting.
Whether you homeschool from a traditional approach or a Charlotte Mason philosophy of education Let’s Go Geography could easily fit into either of those styles bringing with it a joy of learning and fun for all ages.
I absolutely love unit studies and the format of a unit study. This reminds me of the format of a unit study. There are books, crafts, and videos Snippets of information to go over whatever specific geography components you are studying.
Since my boys are still younger Elementary and not writing other than simple copy-work we couldn’t do some of their in-depth writing studies however I am excited to utilize this option once we are at that age.
What I loved most is that they presented the material in a fun and exciting way like you’re traveling the world. In our digital age of video technology, we essentially can travel the world from our couch.
Don’t get me wrong I love a good living literature book that plants ideas and nurtures those ideas however it’s hard to explain to someone what a Canyon is who has literally never seen one before. Or, for us living on the Big Island how huge and different continents are compared to island life.
This is what I love so much about Let’s Go Geography homeschool curriculum. It is the perfect combination of practical learning along with the exciting ability to watch what you’re learning about through a small short video clip. For example, if you are studying North America, there is a video corresponding with specifics to North America’s beautiful scenery that the continent offers.
Great Video content
I don’t know if you’ve been there as I have, but getting onto YouTube is always a little sketchy. You never know what rabbit hole you’re going to go down. Maybe you start watching a video all to realize that wasn’t true or I don’t want my kids to see that. Perhaps you have to pre-watch everything that you put in front of their eyes. At the end of the day, I just don’t always have time for that and I really rest in this program’s choice of videos.
I do want to note however that they are not from a creation-based worldview. This normally would create a conflict for me however the videos and information do not shove evolution down as other programs do. It’s your typical one line millions of years ago, something most Christians deal with on a daily basis of taking their children to museums.
The video aspect I really like about the program because let’s face it there are some days that the normal homeschool routine just needs to be different. There might be an afternoon that someone is sick or not feeling well, or you just need something different. Let’s go geography homeschool curriculum is the perfect solution for those different days or afternoons.
Fun Homeschool Geography Curriculum
Learning geography doesn’t have to be done in a dry boring way. Let’s go geography homeschool curriculum really brings geography to life and an exciting relatable educational format that’s easy to follow for any homeschool household.
I would say even if you don’t homeschool Let’s Go Geography is a great program for parents to utilize with their children during summer vacation to learn something together as a family.
The way that the program’s crafts and projects are put together it doesn’t feel like school. It’s more like a fun project of learning and exploration.
I was glad about our Year 2 membership that the starting point was the continents. Continents are essential to get down when you start homeschooling with early Elementary. So, even if you have early elementary-aged kids don’t be put off by the study of specific countries, there will be some facet of the membership that you’ll be able to use.
The two-year membership one-time payment makes it so easy. I don’t know about you but as you start to get more digital products monthly memberships can really add up. I like their membership because it’s a pay one-time and evaluate later on.
With Let’s Go Geography homeschool curriculum you get two years in your membership which is perfect for teaching because you’ll be able to revisit different things in another year then you couldn’t this year as your children age and grow. Or, you can go at a pace that you choose and not be confined to a one-year sequence.
Since the sequence is to follow by doing little bit by little bit once a week we are still working through our units. However, we have really been enjoying learning all about the continents in an exciting and new way that we haven’t done before.
Who would this curriculum work for?
Really this curriculum would work for any homeschool family of any style of learning with any age child/children.
Who would this curriculum not work for?
Anyone who doesn’t want to print materials or access online. I would even encourage the Charlotte Mason moms out there to give it a try. The printables and worksheets can be done in a Charlotte Mason way of learning or left out altogether. The worksheets just supplement the material. There are tons of handicraft and art projects to dive into.
