Make sure you buy the proper kind in order to get the right results. Find out why manuka honey actually works and isn’t just hype.
Does it have to be manuka honey?
Yes, it does. Bees make honey from the different plants they are around. Manuka honey is made from bees harvesting nectar from the manuka plant in New Zealand and select parts of Australia. It is in the same family as the tea tree plant, or melaleuca plant.
The tea tree plant has already proven anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties to it, and has been used in an essential oil form for decades. These properties happen to go into the honey, making it to be the absolute best option for skin care.
Can’t I just use regular raw honey?
The answer, unfortunately, is no. When I first started to see posts about using honey as a face wash, I didn’t want to spend the extra money on manuka. Manuka honey does come with a hefty price tag, for those on a budget.
Personal Experimentation Results
I live on the big island of Hawaii, and raw honey is very accessible here. I started washing my face with raw Hawaiian honey thinking I would get the same results. My skin was getting softer, however the breakouts were not clearing.
I used an entire 8 oz jar, about 2 months worth. I decided to try a different brand of raw honey from the mainland. The results stayed the same.
At TJ Maxx one day, they happened to have a jar at a good price. I bought it, and within 2 weeks ALL of my breakouts were cleared. I could actually feel a tingling in my face as a difference from the other raw honey I had tried.
IT HAS TO BE MANUKA
I started to do some research on the varying types of manuka. If you look on Amazon, reviews are always mixed. Different posts seem to recommend the most expensive. So what to buy?
There is a UMF rating that NEEDS to be on whatever product you decide on. This verifies that the honey is 100% sourced from bees that have harvested off of manuka plants.
UMF stands for unique manuka factor. So, obviously this is key when purchasing for use of skincare and desired results.
There are many companies out there adding in syrup, or lower grade honey with the name of manuka. Do not buy these products.
You will also see often times other ratings of MGO+. My second jar of manuka I bought, had this rating, but no UMF. My skin started to break out again. Granted, it was significantly cheaper than UMF rated jars.
There are hundreds of companies saying 100% raw manuka honey, MGO rating…
ONLY BUY Manuka honey UMF 10+ or higher
I have only ever purchased UMF 10+ and that has been sufficient for skincare. I am not taking it internally as a supplement as others have done.
The results of using a UMF 10+ manuka honey for over a year now are INCREDIBLE! Since I live in a tropical place and am totally not from here, my skin has really aged with sunspots over the years.
It also has aged significantly with natural child-rearing and lack of sleep. I started to use an all-natural skincare routine years ago, but unfortunately have had breakouts on and off depending on diet or hormonal cycle.
MANUKA HONEY has been the ABSOLUTE BEST remedy for my skin. It really is like God’s hidden beauty secret.
Results of skin now
Since using a UMF 10+ rated manuka honey for over a year, my skin has literally reversed years off of it. I have zero breakouts unless I gorge myself with dairy, but that’s a different point. My skin is always super soft to the touch and fine lines and wrinkles have vanished.
My mother-in-law who only sees me once a year, said you’re the only person I have ever met that looks younger after time instead of older. I’ll take it!
Technique for using manuka honey for skincare
So you’re excited to buy it and try it out for your own. Great. Now what! Well, at first I followed what others said of just a simple face wash routine. But, I have found a technique that works even better.
Instead of just using it as a simple face wash, with a smaller amount. Use at least 1-2 big tablespoons every time you wash your face. I leave it on for at least 5 minutes. I normally put it on before skin brushing then get in the shower.
Over time, I can confidently say breakouts, and aging will diminish. Plus, it’s naturally moisturizing. It has actually saved me money. I’m overly frugal.
I haven’t used a moisturizer or serum since washing with manuka honey. It actually conditions and softens my face so much, there hasn’t been a need to add anything extra.
Wash with manuka honey daily, and use bentonite clay mask weekly.
Bentonite clay mask
- Put 3 Tbs in bowl, add 1 Tb apple cider vinegar. Mix together for a paste consistency.
- Spread liberally on face
- Let dry for at least 20 minutes
- Wash off
- Moisturize with coconut oil or favorite face oil for perfectly natural skincare routine
Apple cider vinegar can also be used as an astringent for those with oily skin or severe acne following manuka face wash regiment.
Side note for those of you who don’t want to splurge on Amazon. Costco has a big jar of UMF 10+ rated manuka honey at certain times of the year. It works great. I personally have used it before. However, if you have the means, order one of the brands below.
You will NOT be disappointed. Feel free to comment with any questions or testimonials of manuka face washing below.
